There are days when we feel like we are just going through the motions of life. We don’t see anything special about washing the dishes, doing the laundry, or shopping for groceries. However, there are days when you suddenly have those moments of clarity. I had one myself while I was sitting in my car, waiting for the ice to melt.

I recalled my days when I was working as a nurse and going out with the ambulance team. I remember that we had to go through a vehicle checklist to ensure that everything was in stock or functioning properly. Once everything was ok, it meant that my team and I would have a better chance of taking care of patients. What if we had the same checklist for success in life?

The Importance of Having Your Own Checklist for Success

Personally, I already have my checklist for success which I follow most days. It’s not a complicated list where I micro-manage myself into doing every little thing for the day. It’s more of a list of what I need to do, plus the approaches that have work for me, so I can show up to look after my patients in the best way.

On days when I follow this process and feel connected to it, I show up for my patients in a completely different state. I’m able to handle more tasks and situations that come my way. I’m more productive because I have already thought about what I need to do first.

I must admit that I don’t go through my checklist for success every day. There are days I go through my process, but I don’t do it because I don’t feel like it. I’m pretty sure that everyone has had days like these when we go, “Uh, I cannot go through this again.” On days like this, I don’t show up in my best state or energy. It shows in my work and my attitude.

Fast forward to today, as I was still waiting for the ice to melt in the front of my car, I was amazed at all the lessons I learned years ago – from the ambulance checklist to my personal checklist for success. From all my experiences, I have identified what works for me to get me going every day and show up as the best version of myself.

Remember that your state of mind will affect how you act, how you express yourself and will change even your energy. As a result, all of these will affect the people around you whether it’s people you talk to on the phone or people you work with. Showing up in your best self will evoke positivity in everyone around you. However, if you’re not in the best state, it’s likely going to be a long day for you and everyone else.
